What is a fuse?
A fuse is a low resistance metallic wire which is enclosed in a non-combustible case. The main function of a fuse is to protect the device or circuit from short circuit or over current.
“Heating effect of current” is the working principle of fuse. Each fuse has been rated with limit, once the current flow crosses that limit the metallic wire melt thus breaking the circuit and stopping the flow of current.
How to select the correct rating size of fuse?
Rating = (Power / Voltage) x 1.25
Though the fuse selection depends on other factors as well such as the environmental conditions but the above formula is the basic to select the right size of the fuse.
Fuse Characteristics:
1) I2t Value of Fuse
2) Rated Voltage of fuse
3) Current carrying capacity of fuse
4) Breaking capacity of fuse
5) Packaging size
Types of Fuse:
· AC and DC Fuses
· High Voltage Fuses
· Link Type Cartridge Fuses
· D-Type Cartridge Fuses
· Bolted Type Fuses
· Surface Mount Fuses
· Thermal Fuses
· Resettable Fuse
Application of Fuses:
Air-conditions
Printers
Motors & Transformers
Scanners
Power convertors
General electrical appliances and devices
Portable Electronics
